Ancient Town, Butrint

Butrint is a magical place, a crossroads of the ancient Mediterranean, and a microcosm of 3000 years of history. Its special atmosphere is created by unique combination of archaeology and natural environment creating a suggestive and special spot, hovering on the borderlands between the worlds of history and myth. Butrint, the ancient Buthrotum lies 3 km from the Corfu Straits on a low hill, almost surrounded by the waters of Lake Butrint and the Vivari Cannel which connects it to the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. To the south the flat Vrina Plain extends to the Greek frontier, punctuated by small Albanian villages while to the North and East, land and lake are surrounded by high mountains. The island of Corfu closes the view to the west and is the backdrop to spectacular sunsets. Butrint is also a microcosm of Albanian history. Its strategic location means that it figures in myth and history from the Peloponnesian War during the 5th century B.C. until the Napoleonic wars for the 19th. Its monuments were built during different historical periods of this long and complex history.
